Faculty Training and Development Workshop

Training, developing and retaining competent faculty into the classroom for student learning is a moral imperative in today’s competitive world of distance education. As such, administrators should offer training and development opportunities for new educators to effectively teach in various learning modalities (online, on-ground, and hybrid formats) using cyberspace technology while focusing on achieving the stated learning outcomes.

Integrating cyberspace technology into the classroom for student learning is a basic necessity in today’s competitive world of education but many educators fear it due to lack of availability and effective training.  This workshop will provide opportunities for participants to discuss basic teaching practices that can enhance both facilitation of the material and student learning. The workshop is based on the emersion model of training used for “training-the-trainers” in the corporate arena as well as for faculty development. Personal experiences and best practices from three different universities (business programs using cutting edge technologies) and corporate computer-based training are explored and discussed.

The seven-hour Faculty Training and Development Workshop is geared toward new faculty members, and the discussion topics include the following:

  1. Mission and Vision for extraordinary educators.
  2. Faculty Credentials for Hiring and Accreditation.  General academic guidelines and expectations.
  3. Overview: Classes, times, locations, teaching modalities, scheduling, traveling process, website and faculty support, etc.
  4. Course Syllabus Content & Expectations. Syllabus Construction & Suggestions: Assignments, activities, exams, due dates, grading etc.
  5. APA Writing Style Basics and Paper Grading. APA Format: Writing style requirements and basics of APA formatting. Grading papers (individually and as teams) exercises.
  6. Group Activities: Handling cheaters, complainers, student requests & concerns, and other classroom challenges.
  7. Teaching Techniques and Best Practices. Adult Learners & Facilitation. Adult Learners: Facilitation vs. lecture. Involvement and facilitation skills. Diversity consideration, students with disabilities, and consistency of grading to all students.
  8. Ethics and Classroom Diversity Management.
  9. Administrative Suggestions: Guidelines for teaching successful and quality courses!  First session, during the course, and last session responsibilities!

As agreed upon and stated by experts, “for most institutions today, the only true sustainable advantage comes from out-innovating the competition. It matters not which particular organization stays alive, rather, it’s only essential that competition among them is fierce and fair – and that the fittest survive.” Therefore, educational institutions cannot survive for long nor prosper without extraordinary faculty members who can be innovative and globally competitive. So, all institutions need to have a process to consciously developing and retaining faculty members for all education modalities. Having a standardized faculty development process is even more critical for institutions involved in distance learning and online education using part-time faculty members.

Workshop objectives:

This session is designed to be interactive so participants can learn and compare best practices from one another as well as from the program facilitator(s). By attending this one-day seminar, current and new faculty members will become more familiarized with:

  • Designing comprehensive syllabi while integrating and emphasizing learning outcomes in the course activities.
  • Taking personal responsibility for effectively facilitating the course’s learning outcomes.
  • Objectively evaluating student papers using the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines.
  • Best practices in teaching online and hybrid courses.
  • The concept of adult education and adult learning styles.
  • Integrating the experiences of adult students in the learning process.
  • Diversity management and ethical issues in the classroom.
  • Effectively handling complainers and other trouble makers in the class.
  • Assessing students’ learning and understanding according to the course and program objectives.
  • Documenting learning assessment outcomes in various courses for improvement purposes and accreditation records.

So, why focus on faculty training and development? Well, the answer is simple. Effective faculty members always have been and will continue to be an important and mission critical asset to any institution as they have the most important job in the world - preparing future leaders of the society! Therefore, one of each educational institution’s goals must be to develop and retain faculty members with the required skills to compete effectively in the global industry because students seek to learn from them the skills required to compete with the very best in their professions. Therefore, educational institutions cannot survive in the long-term nor prosper without extraordinary faculty members who can be innovative and globally competitive.

Workshop materials:

This is an interactive workshop which will require everyone to complete relevant exercises for discussion and group activities.  The session will be interactive and hands on.  The facilitation will be adjusted to the needs of the audience based on continuous assessment of their knowledge and desire for each topic. Participants will be involved in the learning process and they will be able to take home valuable material that can be duplicated for training and development of faculty members at their institutions.

  • Participants will receive a copy of the 2006 textbook entitled “Adult Education in Academia: Recruiting and Retaining Extraordinary Facilitator of Learning, 2nd edition”; Information Age Publishing, authored by Bahaudin G. Mujtaba and Robert Preziosi.
  • Participants will also receive a workbook for the workshop which includes exercises, guidelines and best practices for faculty training and orientation.
  • Furthermore, participants will see videos on diversity management and/or ethical issues that are of concern to all adults in academia.  Participants will have access to contact information on how to secure copies of these videos from original vendors for their use and faculty training.

Presentation and session flow:

The following are the general topics and flow of the presentation and general interaction.

  • An immersion model of training and development will be presented for inculcating faculty trainers and educators into the organizational culture for successful teaching experiences. The immersion model of training has been applied with corporate trainers in the retail and management development industry by the presenter as well as with faculty members in two different universities.  Dr. Mujtaba, the facilitator, will cover such things as faculty hiring and developing practices, faculty teaching load, faculty compensation practices, intellectual property issues, testing online issues, the necessity of being connected online at all times, and continuous faculty evaluation processes.
  • The facilitator will discuss the newest trends in education and training as well as what educators need to know about web-based learning.  It will look at the historical background of web-based learning (WBL), driving forces, delivery systems, what WBL offers (convenience, adaptability, student comfort, interaction, etc.), potential drawbacks, and the compelling issue of cost-effectiveness.
  • The session will cover such things as the cyber community, interaction, feedback, clear instructions, access to instructor, online library usage and protocols, etc. It will present examples and best practices in distance learning in the employee training industry as applied by such giants as Walt Disney World, Sea World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, and the beautiful resorts that partner with such successful organizations in the Central Florida area.
  • Overall, this interactive session will involve participants in role plays, exercises on teaching and responding effectively to students, seeing videos on ethics and diversity management, and discussion opportunities for best practices in facilitation to adult learners.
